Pillars of the Earth

The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett, is the story of a medieval cathedral, from start to finish.   The drama weaves around all the people involved in its building - everyone from the King of England to monks to priests to builders to village people.  Wonderfully told and quite gripping.

Why I love Frederick Forsyth

International thrillers are not something I read a lot of, but I think he's brilliant.

Forsyth's books are fictional, yet really well researched and topically up-to-date. They are complex puzzles that reflect the players in the given international issue at hand.

His major strength is the ability to take all kinds of different facets of a story of an unwiedly nature and put all the pieces together in an economic yet intelligent and page-turning way.

Sounds good to me

If you are like me and spend some time each work day in your car, you could probably use a break from radio.

Here are a few titles that I've enjoyed, given my criteria that they are:

a) not graphically violent (I can skim read it in book form, but audibly, blech!)

b) fun, if not outright funny

c) not too long-winded, as I don't really want to keep track of complicated story lines with many CDs over a few weeks of morning travels

That being said, I've really liked:

Fool

"He who despairs of the human condition is a coward, but he who has hope for it is a fool. "

Eating Well with Food Sensitivities and Allergies

Having a sensitivity to dairy is a drag when you LOVE ice cream!  Gelato and sorbets just don't cut it either, as they are essentially fruit, sugar and, wait for it, no creamy goodness.

Along come coconut milk-based ice creams, available at some health food stores, OR your local library - The Ice Dream Cookbookby Rachel Albert-Matesz.  Tada!

Whip It! - See it, Love it

Whip It, Drew Barrymore's debut film as a director,  never got the reviews and coverage it deserved.

Drinky Pants: A Quitter's Story

Nice RecoveryThe real, published  title of teen author Susan Juby's memoir is "Nice Recovery", but on her website: www.susanjuby.com  she claims to privately refer to the book as “Drinky Pants: A Quitter’s Story”.

Funny and frank, the book is divided into three sections.

Ottawa = Funny?

The Best Laid PlansThe Best Laid Plans won the Stephen Leacock award for humour in 2008.  A great political satire with plenty of insider-type information about the crazy-making workings of elections and Parliament, it really is a Canadiana fun boo

Calling all animal lovers

Why should kids have all the fun?  A good book is a good book, and sometimes they come with pictures!

These are recent favourites for animal lovers of all ages:

Did “chick lit” peak with Bridget Jones?

In my quest for women in the chick lit crowd who have something to say and who make me laugh, I recently found some gems:
