| Writing for Young Audiences - Writing Workshop with Alan Cumyn Wednesday May 22, 2013 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Category : Adults 50-plus, Learning, Writing Alan Cumyn, author of the acclaimed Owen Skye books for middle grade readers, and the recent young adult novel Tilt, offers an introduction to the world of writing for children and young adults. Cumyn, who has also written seven novels for adults, knows both worlds well and will focus on what's particular, and particularly difficult, about writing for young readers. What makes a good story for a five-, or an eight-, or a fifteen-year-old? What are the common traps that adult writers fall into when trying to write for their own kids or other children? How do you tap into your own stories to add to the wealth of fine writing for young audiences? Alan Cumyn will use his own experience both as an author and as a faculty member in the graduate program in Writing for Children and Young Adults at Vermont College of Fine Arts to create a mix of guided discussion, exercises and open forum for those interested in this demanding craft.
