Activities with the Letter Z

Hi, everyone! Here are some fun low-tech activities for your family to try together at home. Perhaps you can include this list of activities in your morning routine, or in your afternoon routine following nap time. Please note that we are compiling family literacy ideas for each letter of the alphabet -meaning that you'll have 26 days worth of songs, yoga postures, tongue twisters and more to have fun with! Enjoy :)

All about Zippers

  • Did you know that the person who invented the modern zipper, Gideon Sundbackbased his production in St Catharines, Ontario, in 1913? That’s why people say that the zipper is a Canadian invention. But Sundback himself was Swedish-American!
  • Are you familiar with the “invisible zipper” and the “magnetic zipper”? The first one has the teeth hidden behind a tape so that the zipper is invisible ; the second one allows for one-handed closure and is very often used in sportswear.
  • Scavenger hunt : try to find as many zippers as possible around your house! (ex: check your backpack!)

“Z” Poem

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy...Was he?

Zebra craft

Create a zebra face using a paper plate. And some friends for him too!

What You Need for a Zebra :

Two paper platesblack construction papergluewhite crayon or chalk. Zebra eyes can be cut out so you can wear the face as a mask, or to play peek-a-boo, or you can use black paper circles or wiggly eyes if you would like.

Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes? We’re going for white with black stripes, so we will start with a white paper plate!

Cut black paper triangles about 7 cm long and 3 cm at the wide end. Glue them to the plate with the wide part of the triangle at the edge and the pointy part pointing towards the centre where zebra’s nose would be. Leaving a white space down the centre will define zebra’s nose.

Cut an oval for zebra’s snout, about 10 cm long by 7 cm high and glue this on the bottom edge of the plate. Use your crayon or chalk to mark the nostrils and a happy smile!

With the second plate cut ear shapes about 10 cm long and glue to the top of the plate. Cut and glue smaller black ear shapes to define the ears.

What will you do with the eyes? Peek through holes?!

Animal Zoo

Paint a paper plate brown to make a bear, orange to make a lion, grey for a rabbit, yellow for a giraffe, black for a cat, pink for an elephant – wha-a-at?

Experiment with all the different shapes of ears and eyes and noses that these animals have!

Zoom, zoom, zoom, we're going to the moon. Zoom, zoom, zoom, we'll be there very soon.

If you'd like to take a trip, climb aboard my rocket ship. Zoom, zoom, zoom, we're going to the moon.

Zesty Zucchini

Working up an appetite? What about zesty zucchini pizza? Everybody can pitch in to create their own zesty snack. (Zesty means flavored, spicy)

  • small zucchinis – enough for your family to enjoy (recipe is based on 6)
  • tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup tomato, pizza or marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (6 oz)
  • 1/3 cup finely shredded parmesan cheese (1.4 oz)
  • Toppings your family will like - pepperoni, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, spinach, eggplant, onions … use your imagination to make a crazy delicious pizza!
  • Chopped fresh oregano for garnish

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cover a baking pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Cut each zucchini into halves lengthwise. If necessary, trim the curved side so pizzas will lie flat on the baking sheet. Hollow the zucchini slightly to make space for the toppings. Pat insides dry with paper towel.
  3. Sprinkle a little olive oil on each zucchini. Drop on sauce a spoonful at a time and spread to cover. If you don’t go right to the edges, it won’t be so messy in your oven!
  4. Spread your veggies and meats and sprinkle tops with cheese. Or vice versa – it's your crazy delicious do it your way!
  5. Bake in preheated oven 12 - 18 minutes (time will vary depending on thickness of the zucchinis and how crisp/tender you want them).
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle with garnish if desired. Wait for your zucchini pizza to cool to just a pleasant warm before eating.

If a predator (ex: a fox) gets too close to a rabbit, the rabbit will run away in a zig-zag pattern... Can you walk, slide or run backwards in a zig-zag pattern? Use your imagination and have fun!

Tongue Twister

“Zany zebra Zoe’s zippy zipper zips!

Is this a zither? This is a zither. (A zither is a stringed musical instrument)

Zebras zig, zebras zag, zebras zoom, zebras zzzz.”
