Part of the Bywords logo

Join us for the ceremony for 2021 that will offer an enjoyable evening of  poetry readings and music.   The award is in its 18th year, established in memory of poet John Newlove.  Judges for the award have included eminent poets and writers.  Each year the winner will receive a certificate and the opportunity to publish a chapbook through Bywords. is an online magazine which publishes emerging and established poets who are either past or current Ottawa residents, students and workers. Bywords publishes a chapbook by the recipient of the award each year and that chapbook is launched at the Award Ceremony.  Signed copies are available through the website.

Hosted by Amanda Earl of Bywords, the ceremony for 2021 will offer an enjoyable evening of  poetry readings and music. Local musician John Ian will share his intense, poetic and heartfelt songs inspired by folk, rock and alternative music.  Last year’s Newlove Award recipient, Megan Misztal, will be launching her chapbook, " Vestiges.”  She will read a selection of poetry from Vestiges.

The honourable mention poets and the winning poet for this year’s award will also read selections of their poetry as they are announced, as well as selections of John Newlove’s poems.
