Please join us to celebrate the winning authors,who will read their stories and receive their prize on September 14 during an Afternoon of Storytelling.


The 50+ Short Story Contest is now closed.  We thank everyone who submitted a short story!  The winning authors will be notified by the end of June, and will present their stories during an afternoon of storytelling on September 14, 2016.

To be eligible, entries must be 

  • Original and unpublished works
  • 2000 words or less
  • In English or French
  • The work of a single author
  • Submitted electronically or typewritten
  • Submitted between May 3 and May 31, 2016


OPL will be offering the following workshops. Online registration is required.  

Michèle Vinet will also offer a workshop in English by telephone on May 3. To register, call The Good Companions Seniors' Centre Without Walls at 613-236-0428 ext. 2323.

How to enter

The 50+ Short Story Contest is now closed.

Please note

  • Participation in this contest is free
  • Ensure that your name does not appear on the story pages
  • The short story title should appear on every page of your story
  • Contestants are limited to two submissions per person
  • Stories submitted will not be returned
  • Plagiarized or previously published entries, or entries that do not follow guidelines, will be disqualified
  • Local authors Jeffrey Ross, Peter Scotchmer, Mike Stewart, Deborah-Anne Tunney, and Michèle Vinet will judge the submissions.
  • Stories will be judged on the following criteria: characterization, plot, setting and atmosphere, narrative voice, and mechanics.

  • The deadline to participate is May 31, 2016. Please postmark your entries by this date.

Prize structure

  • The authors of eight winning stories will share prize money of $400
  • Participants can win only one prize
  • Successful participants will be notified by June 30, 2016
  • Winning authors will be presented their prizes during the 'An afternoon of storytelling' event on September 14, 2016
