Activities with the Letter I

Hi, everyone! Here are some fun low-tech activities for your family to try together at home. Perhaps you can include this list of activities in your morning routine, or in your afternoon routine following nap time. Please note that we are compiling family literacy ideas for each letter of the alphabet -meaning that you'll have 26 days worth of songs, yoga postures, tongue twisters and more to have fun with! Enjoy :)

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

Sing along with this video– using your hands to make the actions, and different voices/speeds!

The itsy bitsy spider (make a spider with your index finger and thumb)

Went up the water spout (make climbing movement)

Down came the rain and washed the spider out. (move your hands down)

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain (raise your arms and make a sun shape over your head)

And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again (make climbing movement again)

Imagination Travel

Use the alphabet as your guide. If you play with two or more people, challenge yourself to remember other players' words.

For example :

I went on a trip to Alberta and I brought an apple

I went on a trip to Brockville and I brought a book

I went on a trip to Chicago and I brought a canoe

If you're happy and you know it

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands (x2)

If you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it,

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands

If you're sad and you know it, say : “boo hoo!” (x2)

If you're sad and you know it, and you really want to show it,

If you're sad and you know it, say : “boo hoo!”

If you're mad and you know it, stomp your feet (x2)

If you're mad and you know it, and you really want to show it,

If you're mad and you know it, stomp your feet

Inhale / Exhale yoga breathing

Breathing in yoga is very important.

If you can... breathe deeply through your nose, and exhale out your nose.

As you breathe in, count in your head to four (1, 2, 3, 4) and as you breathe out, count backwards from four (4, 3, 2, 1).

This is a good way to calm down if you are anxious or upset.

Improv' Games

With two or more people, try to tell a story, with each person providing one word at a time. This can be a lot of fun. Silly or serious.

For example :

Once...Upon...A...Time...There...Was...A...Dragon...who...liked...

Tongue Twister

Ike ships ice chips in ice chip ships”
