Awesome Read - "American Sniper"

14/04/2016

I was frankly surprised by how much I enjoyed Chris Kyle’s memoir. It is fast paced, exciting and chock full of details about guns, special operations and the military tactics used by Navy Seals. In Kyle’s version of the Iraqi conflict, the lines between good and evil are clearly drawn. He is unapologetic about his love of fighting and regales us with endless tales of shooting insurgents. He is likeable, plain spoken, and I soon found myself rooting for him.

However, I was shocked to hear Iraqis referred to as “savages”. Their deaths did not seem to matter much to Kyle and at no time did he equate the loss of an enemy soldier with that of an American.  It is ironic that it was a U.S. veteran who later murdered Kyle in his home state of Texas (not a spoiler as it occurs after the book was published).

The author defends his views with conviction and reminds his critics that they remain in a position of comfort and safety, while he and his family pay the price.  This book will resonate with those who have connections to the military and it is an eye opener for those who don’t.
