Big Library Read : The Other Einstein

The next Big Library Read is The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict.  From June 12th-26th, Ottawa Public Library patrons have access to unlimited eBook checkouts.

National Geographic "Genius": viewers have seen the transformation of Einstein's first wife, Mileva Maric, from a promising physicist to a hysterical, harried housewife.  Benedict, on the other hand, writes about a complex person who is struggling to succeed in a nontraditional woman's role in the early 1900s.  She writes about Maric's phsical difficulties, gender obstacles, friendships, familial bonds and most of all, her love of learning.  The author writes a complelling argument for Maric to have been a collaborator with Einstein on his most famous theories that ultimately led to his Nobel Prize in physics.

After finishing, The Other Einstein, I tooka bit of time to appreciate all of the women who fought to describe a tradional woman's role to be whatever we want it to be.
