The Canadian Flag: a showcase at the Main branch

Canada Flag / Drapeau du Canada

2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag. Since 1770, the Canadian Red Ensign was flown in Canada, as it was based on the British flag, the Union Jack. After years of discussions and debates where many felt Canada needed its own proper flag, 1965 saw the final selection of the flag we know and love today.

The Museums and Heritage Programs Unit, in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library, presents a new exhibit about the Canadian flag, and flags from around Canada, on the 2nd floor of the OPL Main branch until October 2015. Come explore how the maple leaf flag was created and see flags used in the past.
