Join All In A Day host Alan Neal, Jo-Ann Oosterman and the rest of the All In A Day Book Club for a discussion with Jo-Ann Oosterman, about her book Tom's Story. The book is Jo-Ann Oosterman's examination of her 16-year relationship with Ojibway artist Tom Hogan.
Tom Hogan lived much of his life on the streets of Ottawa, in and out of rehab and seeing the inside of shelters. He was also a brilliant artist who sold his colourful canvases in the Byward Market. Among those he met in his journey was Jo-Ann, who continued a sometimes challenging friendship with him for sixteen years.
With Tom’s permission, she wrote about the hard realities of his life – a traumatic childhood, sleeping in bug-infested shelters, or panhandling in the sub-zero weather for just one more bottle. Sometimes she helped; sometimes she got in the way.
