Celebrate International Literacy Day!

08/09/2016

"Since 1950, the adult literacy rate at the world level has increased by 5 percentage points every decade on average" (have a look at UNESCO’s summary of literacy data and the infographic below). The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) International Literacy Day 2016 marks the celebration of its 50th anniversary with the theme “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”.  Celebrations are taking place all around the word, with the largest occurring at the main UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, including the launch of the Global Alliance for Literacy (GAL).

OPL supports literacy in many ways, including English and French conversation groups, homework help for adults and children, and through partnerships with local literacy organizations, including Frontier College, People, Words, and Change, and more.
