In this tumultuous and unprecedented year, Ottawa Capital Pride 2020 invites you to connect and celebrate virtually “Wherever we are”! The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) wants to help you celebrate too!
We asked some members of Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQ+ community to share one of their favourite titles and explain why it is important to them. Watch their enthusiastic recommendations on the the library's YouTube channel! Tune in to the library’s channel later in Capital Pride week for some more surprise videos!
The library invites everyone, and especially youth who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, to join a live conversation with debut transgender author Tobly McSmith, author of Stay Gold, moderated by local consultant, educator and organizer Fae Johnstone.
While large gatherings are still not permitted, no one can stop you from dancing on your own. From party anthems to laid-back folk songs Ottawa Public Library has you covered – to help you celebrate Capital Pride, we’ve put together list of streaming music by 2SLGBTQ+ artists available from the OPL 24 hours a day.
Everyone deserves to be seen and heard. With that in mind, this year the library wants to spotlight some of the fabulous 2SLGBTQ+ authors who are People of the Global Majority and whose work is available to borrow in digital formats. In addition, the library’s Content Services department, who help supply us with all the newest material to keep us going, has updated all their annual lists of picks for adult, teen and children's titles. Plus films!
Another great way to enjoy and learn more about the tremendous diversity within the 2SLGBTQ+ community, "wherever we are", is to listen to some outstanding podcasts. There has been a veritable explosion in the world of podcasting in the past year, with more to come. There is something out there for everyone! Here is just a taste!
The whole family can celebrate throughout the week with our live virtual Rainbow Storytimes in English or French or both official languages that encourage diversity and promote acceptance. Through books, stories, songs and rhymes about families, friendship, love and all the different and unique things that make us special. What a great occasion to wear your favourite outfit!
Finally, are you going to miss the parade? Don’t worry. The parade is also going virtual this year! Capital Pride is assembling a video montage of floats which will go live at 2pm on Sunday, August 30th. So in addition to being able to catch a glimpse of the Bookmobile, you’ll be able to see staff from many of our branches - Check it out!
Happy Pride 2020! Enjoy the festivities “Wherever we are!”
