Deacon Locke Went To Prom by Brian Katcher --- Teen Book Review

Submitted on behalf of NC TAG member Catherine L.

It’s That time of the year. Prom is right around the corner and promposals are everywhere. Try as he might, there’s no hiding for Deacon Locke. However, as it is part of the high school experience he decides to go - and hopefully not alone. But, for the shy and unusually tall boy, asking a girl to go with him is a Herculean  task. As prom night approaches, Deacon finds his ideal candidate - but there’s a catch; she is his grandmother…

Deacon Locke Went To Prom by Brian Katcher is a contemporary coming of age novel. Our main character is different from most male protagonists found in YA. An effortlessly humorous and witty character, he is easy to love, just as are his grandma and the girl he meets. The plot is at times a bit farfetched but none less cleverly and wonderfully crafted. Overall, this delightful quick read is definitely worth it.

I give this novel a 3 out of 5 stars. Charming, clever, hilarious, heartwarming and sweet, this novel will surely put a smile on your face.

Deacon Locke Went To Prom by Brian Katcher is recommended for readers ages 13 and up.
