Family History at the library

25/01/2018

Budding genealogist?  Or an old hand?  Either way, OPL's genealogy collection has lots of resources for you.  Get your family history feet wet by borrowing one of our recommended Genealogy Guides for Beginners, or learn about specific records for your ancestors' homeland with a geographic guide, for example Canadian Genealogy Guides or Guides for Other Countries.  If you want to explore a particular aspect of genealogy, there are subject guides on everything from Genetic Genealogy to caring for your photographs.  Use the library's online catalogue to locate more books, videos, or e-books.

The search for genealogy records usually begins with an online database.  You can use Ancestry Library, Généalogie Québec, and P.R.D.H. for free in all library branches.  Early Canadiana Online and Globe and Mail Historical can be used from home as well as in the library.

If you're a real keener, further your research by consulting the genealogy reference collection, located at Main, Nepean Centrepointe, and Cumberland branches.  You'll find, among other things, indexes to census, civil registration, and land records; cemetery and church record transcriptions; newspaper indexes; historical Ottawa newspapers and city directories; and local and family histories.

For help with a particular question, or guidance on getting started, make an appointment for a genealogy consultation.
