Gah! That's not what I meant to say!

At the end of a long work week, I had a great time reading Jillian Madison's Damn You, Autocorrect!, a compilation of embarrassing text messages which people have inadvertently sent to friends and loved ones.

For those who are not aware, Autocorrect is a software function which attempts to correct common typos on the fly by guessing and inserting the word that one is really trying to write. The goal of this feature is to save the user time, but if Autocorrect guesses wrong, an unobservant texter may be left struggling to save face!

Unsurprisingly, some of the most mortifying errors involve references to bodily functions (both sexual and scatological in nature), but there are many more errors that do not. In the "What's Cookin' " chapter, for example,  "Matthew" informs someone (perhaps his spouse) that the "Hamburger is detonated," when he evidently means "defrosted".

It's not just the errors that are amusing to read, however; often the reactions of both the recipient and the sender (once they've realized their mistake) are equally funny. Some react with (occasionally profane) bewilderment, while others are left in stitches. "Lol" (shorthand for "laugh out loud") appears often, as does "Hahahaha". Many simply roll with it and respond in a teasing or sardonic manner, and sometimes the exchanges can be quite creative, as in the following:

-  Can u start chopping some Rosemary and rhyme?
- You want me to rhyme while i chop? Lol
- Lol
- Aint no stoppin/only choppin
- Cuttin up myself some rosemary/ betta watch my fingaz or its gonna get scary
