Helping children cope with stressful times

Mar 23, 2020

When there are unusual things happening in the world, children may not have a complete understanding of what is going on around them, but will sometimes pick up on other's emotions. They often don't know how to express what they feel. Today's post has some ideas to help if you feel your child might be getting scared or anxious.

First a video (in English--log into this link to a video on Just for Kids with your OPL Library card and PIN) and a song (in French) about feelings.

Often stories will prompt discussions. Here are a couple of great picture books available as ebooks to share.

For 50 years Sesame Street has been helping children to understand their world. Here is a short video from them designed for when big things are going on around children.

In closing, this clip from Mr. Rogers reminds children that they are bigger and stronger than things on TV, as they can turn it off. I can't help but think that is a message for all ages, as we remember to take time to turn off our devices and go for a walk.
