Languages at the Library

23/11/2018

Always wanted to learn a language? The library gives you lots of options both online and in-person, all for free!

Several branches hold conversation groups in languages including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese, with volunteers helping participants learn and practice basic conversational speech. Click on the 'Programs and Events' tab on our homepage and search for 'Conversation' to see what groups are available across Ottawa, or select a branch near you to see what is offered there.

Can't get to an in-person class? No problem! Your library card also gives you free access to Mango languages, with 40 online lessons in many world languages. From our homepage, click the 'Browse' tab, select 'Online resources' from the drop-down menu, and scroll down to Mango languages.

For anyone wanting to learn more in-depth vocabulary and grammar, the library's book collection is a great source of dictionaries, phrasebooks, and grammar guides in many languages, often with audio recordings to help with pronounciation--we even have guides for Egyptian hieroglyphics!
