The Lifeboat Clique by Kathy Parks

22/04/2016

Some may say Denver Reynolds has a death wish. Why else would she attend a beach house party - to which she is uninvited - hosted by her former now popular ex-best friend Abigail and be surrounded by her arch enemies? Oh yeah... Croix. That's right, she dared to go because handsome popular independent Croix had asked her to go with him. Was it fate or a miracle? She isn't too sure. Unfortunately, this wasn't the only surprise this day had in store. During the party a tsunami hit the coast of California, whipping out everything that stood in its way. Denver and a handful of others manage to escape with their lives by holding onto the roof as they were swept out to the sea. But of course, the few fellow survivors were no other than Abigail and her clique. Now floating in the middle of nowhere with the most popular kids at her school and waiting to be rescued, Denver wonders what's going to kill her first - dehydration, a heat stroke or the girl she used to love like a sister.

Lifeboat Clique is a unique survival and coming of age fiction set in modern day United States. The novel is hilariously dark and twisted and sparkles with a fresh voice. It is fast-paced, has a strong willed protagonist and is a fairly easy read. The characters in the story are relatable, sincere and believable. The dialogue and interactions between them are witty, snarky and fun and will have readers smiling.

I give this a book a 3.75 out of 5 stars and would recommend this book to readers looking for unique young adult fiction. It's Mean Girls meets Life of Pi in this dark, twisted, hilarious and fun novel. If you are up to be taken on a unusual and strange but wild ride this book is the one for you.

This book is recommended for readers ages 12 and up.
