Love Your Library: Ontario Public Library Week

It’s Ontario Public Library Week!

While there is plenty to talk about on the subject – programming, digital services and resources, new technologies, and fascinating speakers – I’m going to suggest a few items from the collection just to celebrate some plain old love for the library.

For a combination of fascinating history and bibliophilia, I recommend Alberto Manguel’s The Library at Night. Beautifully and engagingly written, this is a perfect choice for anyone  interested in the history of libraries and why they remain sources of devotion and controversy in equal measure. Die-hard fans and non-fiction neophytes will equally relish  picking this book to curl up with on a chilly day!

Avi Steinberg worked for two years as a librarian at a Boston prison. His memoir, Running the Books, touches on many issues pertaining to the North American prison model, as well as the important role libraries and literacy play in our society. A relevant and challenging response to questions about whether libraries are “essential” –  and just who needs libraries, anyway?

For something a little more decorative, this recently published coffee table book, The Library: A World History, is pure indulgence in the aesthetics of libraries all over the world.  Whether you prefer a utilitarian model or something rather more gilded, you will enjoy the architectural interpretations of libraries as they vary across different periods and cultures.

Maybe you’d like a few tales from the other side of the desk, as found in I Work at a Public Library...

....but for a few tales from the other side, try the recent Canadian publication Tomes of Terror: Haunted Bookstores and Libraries
