Managing your holds: Curbside holds pickup

For the most recent information about returns and holds pickup service, please see this page.

Holds pickup by appointment at OPL will begin on June 15 as part of our new curbside service. If you had holds available for pickup or in transit when the Library closed in March, please take action by June 7 by logging in to your OPL account.  Below are the answers to some of the questions you might have. For more information about curbside service, please refer to Curbside returns and holds pickup service and Holds pickup appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where can I pick up my holds?

Starting June 15, you can pick up holds by appointment at the following locations, during new hours of operation:

**Please note that these branch locations were selected based on these criteria: safety, geography, accessibility, equity, and usage.

For more information about when other branches will open, please see this page

How do I manage my current holds?

You can log in to your OPL account to unpause your current holds, to change the pickup location to one of the six open branches, or to cancel your holds.

Can I keep a closed branch as the pickup location for my holds?

Yes, you can choose to keep your pickup location at a branch not offering curbside service. Your position in the queue will be maintained and your hold will be filled once your branch reopens. For more information about when other branches will open, please see this page

My holds are ready at a branch not offering curbside service. What will happen to them?

If you have holds ready at a branch that is not offering curbside service, you will be able to pick up these holds when the branch reopens. You can find information about when other branches will open on this page

I had some holds that were available or in transit, and now I can’t find them. What happened to them?

Holds that were available or in transit at the time of the closure have been made temporarily unavailable to allow you to edit the pickup locations or to pause these holds if you wish. The holds should now appear in the “not ready” section of your holds until they are available.

I had holds that were not available or in transit when the library closed. How do I manage them?

The library has paused all holds that were not available or in transit before the closure. If you want these holds, you can log in to your OPL account and resume the hold AND change the pickup location to one of the six open branches. If you do not want these holds right now, you can log in to your account and make sure they are paused.

Last week I spoke with library staffer who checked my account and told me I had 3 items that had been in transit and arrived the day after the library closed. He told me I could pick them up when I got an email. Then today I checked my account and the - in transit - items had been changed to: not ready. When I called the library I was told the library changed the system this week and that's why they are not there? Can I or can I not pick up the 3 dvds: Doc Martin (8), Get Shorty (2?) and VEEP (last season) when I get an email? And why was I told they were there and then told today they weren't. The fellow today seemed very unsure about what was going on, but the fellow last week said they were likely on the shelf at Beaverbrook.

Items that were in transit or available have been temporarily changed to "not ready." This allows people to change the pickup location or pause these holds if they wish, since available or in transit holds cannot be edited.

If you do not change the location of these holds, these holds will still be sent to Beaverbrook. Once they are available there, you will get an email allowing you to book a pickup appointment.

Thank you.

How do I make an appointment to pick up this Dvd at Cumberland?

Germain Montminy

Hello Germain,

If you already have a hold on this item, you will get an email or a phone call when it is ready. There will be instructions included on how to book an appointment. New holds can't be placed yet, but we will make sure to let everyone know when they can.

Thank you.

Good morning,

It took me awhile to figure out how to select a new branch. You may want to add a line that users should click on the current location to select one of the new locations from the resulting pop-up menu.

how do I renew my card which expires in July?

Library cards that have been used recently and have no fees will usually renew automatically. You can also renew your card by calling InfoService at 613-580-2940.
Thank you.

Hello everyone - I still can't figure out how to unpause holds, do you have a phone number that I can phone to get help, I have selected a new pickup site - Centerpointe - but when I click on the paused, it doesn't change to resume. Thanks Mary Walker

Hello Mary,
When you click on the "pause" option, there should be a pop-up that allows you to select a date range to pause your items. If you are having trouble, you can contact InfoService at 613-580-2940 and they will be able to help you out.
Thank you.

When will the appointment booking open? I assume it will open a few days before June 15 or does it become available on June 15?

The booking system is open now. If you have available holds, you should receive and email or phone call with instructions on how to book an appointment.
Thank you.

The items says it's 'first-come first served'. How do I put them on hold or pick them up?

Right now, they are in my 'for later' tab.

Ex: Where the sidewalk ends
James and the Giant Peach
You read to me I'll read to you
The dot
Born in the wild
actual size
The paper bag princess

...and more.

Basically everything I was hoping to borrow.

Items that are 'available but not holdable' are items that are not currently checked out, but they are unfortunately not available for pickup at this time. New holds cannot be placed right now in order to allow employees to safely work through the backlog of holds and process returns. We will let everyone know when new holds can be placed, and at that time, these items will have a 'place hold' option.
Thank you.

I could pick up my hold Thursday, June 18 at 3h15 or Friday at 2h45. Please advise me as what's best for you!
Thanks! Jacqueline Cregheur

Hello Jacqueline,
If you have a hold ready for pickup, you should receive an email or phone call with details on how to book an appointment. You can also contact InfoService at 613-580-2940 for assistance in booking an appointment.
Thank you!
