At Manotick, sometimes outreach is a picnic

The Library's Soapbox Derby at the Picnic in the park

The Manotick Branch Library participated in the Community of Manotick's Picnic-in-the-Park 2018 and the 8th Annual Soapbox Derby on Sunday August 29.  This was organized by the Manotick village and Community Association and the link (temporary) to the event and its photos can be found here:

One of our Children's Programmers, Anita, represented the Library at this event and her account and photos of the fun are presented below;

It started at 9 am and raced until 3 pm. Two cars at a time race, each driver must be 7 years old, with a homemade, gravity powered vehicle.

On arrival, the Storywalk (compliments of the Richmond branch) was put up and it was an immediate hit!  Families and children of all ages (even teens) started walking and reading the book! They seemed to really love it.

I brought two foot-powered homemade cardboard cars with me (to represent the library), these were used to interact with kids and race them: a child in one car and me in the other. These fun, impromptu races got the attention of Derby volunteers and I was invited to participate in a “novelty race”. So, after lunch, Mr. Allan Hann, announced the OPL was racing! I raced against one of our techno buddy students! She won!

OPL shared a tent with the Manotick brass band. They finished at 1 pm, and I took over the tent for an interactive storytime, from 1:15 to 2:30 (almost). We read 5 books, sang songs, played with the cardboard cars and, of course, played with the Parachute.
