Milkman by Anna Burns wins 2018 Man Booker!

Of all the Man Booker shortlisted titles this fall, Milkman was the least likely to be the winner - according to all those making bets.  It goes to show how hard it is to predict what a literary prize jury chooses in the end.  The jury calls Milkman  "incredibly original"  and "utterly distinctive"; it breaks the run of American novels and all male novelists who have been winning in later years.  Burns is a Northern Irish writer, the first in Man Booker history.

Sectarianism, sexual harassment, and other unfortunate universal themes,  in the experimental and challenging writing (like climbing a mountain, it's worth the view at the top! says the jury chair), you can count on a strong Irish voice on the page, and an unforgettable narrator.

The rest of the 2018 shortlisted titles are always worth pursuing, too, and your fastest route to taste testing is through our Express eBooks - try them out!
