Moral Disorder

17/11/2013

If the title of this book makes you inclined to give it a miss, don’t let it. Until recently, I was myself reluctant to pick it up, but I decided to try out the audiobook (available in CD and downloadable formats), and I’m glad that I did.
This collection of ten interconnected stories presents Nell, the main character, at various stages of her life, from her girlhood in 1940s northern Ontario to the present day.  Sibling rivalry, self- discovery, ambiguous relationships, aging, and loss… the author explores all of these with her usual critical eye. Unsurprisingly, there is sardonic humour (I’ve never laughed out loud as much when reading an Atwood work as I did with this one), but there is tenderness as well, and narrator Lorelei King does an excellent job presenting all of this in the audio version.
