Music for a Cold Winter Week

It's still winter. It's cold out. It's still snowing. I don't ski and I dread shovelling. Admittedly, I simply don't get through this winter hump without a few good tunes within reach. Sound familiar? Here are a few music suggestions that have crossed my playlist through January.

Songs for Winter Denial

Wishing it were still summer? Crank up a few summer dance mixes. Ed Sheeran; Groove Station mixes; Z103.5 Hitmix mixes; a Best of 2017 compilation - nothing moves snow around like Luis Fonsi's Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber! If you're looking for a bit of world flavour, consider grooving to Jesse Cook or some Sultans of String. For housework motivation, I reach for Alan Doyle's So Let's Go or burst out in song along to a Pitch Perfect movie soundtrack

Songs for regrouping

Winter is a great opportunity to slow it down and take time for yourself. For a quiet mindful moment, consider some Jean-Michel Blais on piano; Leonard Cohen; or a Music for Mindfulness mix. If you like to jazz up a catch up meal with a friend or a quiet reading night, you may enjoy Madeleine Peyroux, Diana Krall's Turn up the Quiet; Norah Jones; or Eliane Elias

Sounds of the North

Sometimes, I like to sip a hot coco or take a long winter walk while listening to music featuring throat singing. This past month, I started listening to Silla + Rise Debut, sonic throat singing meets electronic music, available through our Freegal Sony Music catalogue database. This album was nominated for a 2017 JUNO Award in the Indigenous Music Album of the Year. Other artists that feature throat singing skills include Quantum Tangle and Tanya Tagaq

What kind of music gets you through winter?
