OPL's Most Popular Books of 2017

12/01/2018

Want to know what everyone else has been reading? Here are a selection of the most popular books at OPL over the last year, as determined by highest number of checkouts. In Adult Fiction, thrillers and suspense still reign, though Canadian literary fiction is also popular--it's no shock that the 2016 Giller Prize winner Do Not Say We Have Nothing was one of our most popular reads last year. In terms of Adult Non-fiction, popular titles run the gamut of celebrity memoir, social commentary, popular science and lifestyle trends. Mysteries are always popular here, and the top authors include familiar favorites like Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and Lee Child as well as relative newcomer Clare Mackintosh, whose books have only been available in Canada since 2016. The most popular Graphic Novel for adults last year was The Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire--not a surprise in a year where the beloved Tragically Hip frontman was very much on people's minds and in their hearts, and a year in which awareness and conversation around the shameful history of residential schools in Canada reached new levels. It is interesting to note that two older titles were among the most popular books for teens in 2017--Thirteen Reasons Why, due to the popularity of the Netflix series based on the title; and The Outsiders, one of the all time classics of teen fiction, which celebrated 50 years in print last year. The most popular reads for children highlighted familiar series and authors: the Big Nate and Geronimo Stilton series are still going strong, and beloved Canadian author Robert Munsch shows up on the Picture Book list not once, but twice! Fun non-fiction reads are tops for kids, including perennial favourite topics like weird facts, gross jokes, Lego and Pokemon.
