She’s a headstrong young woman with a steel leg who masquerades as a boy-engineer in the evenings... He’s a super-spy with a bionic eye and a flair for top hats and sword-canes... They fight crime! (and share a romantic ride aboard a stolen zeppelin)
What is steampunk? The Urban Dictionary http://www.urbandictionary.com/ describes it as follows:
Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner."
Steampunk paranormal romance novels typically feature damsels who can get themselves out of their own distress (using clockwork or gunpowder or a mix of the two!) and great world-building that combines history and fantasy.
- The Iron Seas, by Meljean Brook: This series takes place in a world where workers have their tools grafted to their bodies and nanos infect most of the population of Europe, Asia and Africa. A world where oceans and walls are the only thing that keep the zombies out. A world where life can be brutal and but also quite beautiful. I read this whole series at least once a year.
- Parasol Protectorate, by Gail Carriger: Alexia Tarabotti has no soul. It’s not too bad, except when she touches a werewolf or a vampire and turns them back to human! This makes her less than popular with the wrong kind of crowd, and leads her on adventures that range from (more-or-less) civilized London, to the Scottish country side and finally to Egypt! Funny and sexy.
- The Glorious Victorious Darcys, by Beth Ciotta: This series revolves around the discovery of an “invention of historical importance”. What comes to light quickly is that the three Darcy siblings are chasing after relics left behind by the time travellers who propelled Victorian science so many years ago. To find something good (maybe even the legendary school bus the travellers arrived in!), they’ll need to enlist help from the Frek, offspring of time travellers and native Victorians, who display unique powers.
