Make your summer sweet! Mark Canada’s 150th anniversary and join in the Ottawa Public Library’s year-long celebration of storytelling, at our Dominion Day Strawberry SocialSaturday, July 8 from noon to 5 p.m. – at the Nepean Centrepointe branch, 101 Centrepointe Drive. Activities will take place inside the branch and on the surrounding grounds – rain or shine. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

This special summer, we celebrate Storytelling through Canada and Canadian Authors, and our Dominion Day Strawberry Social will take you back in time with a nod to one of Canada’s most beloved literary characters – Anne of Green Gables. Enjoy a strawberry tart with the celebrated red-head at one of our two afternoon tea services and take part in a scene out of one of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s cherished novels.

Step through Canadian history with Victorian era decor, bilingual folk song and dance, games and activities that honour tradition.

The entertainment kicks off with an energetic and interactive performance by the father-teacher-musicians who make up the children’s band Hey Buster. Also taking the stage is Sébastien Lemay, with a musical storytelling set featuring traditional tales from the Outaouais. Lemay is followed by local up-and-coming singer-songwriter Andrew Cassara (and band). All ages will enjoy the four-part vocal harmonies of Ottawa’s Four Tune Quartet.

The celebration continues with a lively routine from the Stirling Dancers highland dance group, and storytelling through movement with an Indigenous hoop dance performed by Rhonda Doxtator.

Children and adults are invited to join in a variety of activities, including: face-painting, button-making, balloon animals, juggling, bubbles, Canadian trivia, and vintage games such as potato sack racing. Special story times have also been planned throughout the day, which you can fit in between learning how to step dance with the Celtic Cross Dancers, and watching local magician John Pert perform.

Take in a piece of local history with the Taverns and Troublemakers and Time Traveller displays and be sure to visit our reading nook and BiblioBike – both featuring special collections that highlight Canada and Canadian authors.

This celebration is coming together with the generous support of our partners: the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA), Centrepointe Theatres, City of Ottawa Museums, City of Ottawa Archives, and Dovercourt Recreation.
