Remembering Stan Lee

This week, the world said goodbye to the legendary comic book creator, Stan Lee.

You might recognize him as that one man who has a cameo in just about every blockbuster Marvel movie. He’s in every movie because Stan Lee is credited with the creation, or being involved in the co-creation, of over three hundred super-hero characters.

He started his career in comics in the 1940s and never stopped. Some of his most notable characters include Spider-man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four.

Creating some of the world’s most notable comic book characters isn’t the only contribution he made; in the mid-1950s the comic book industry in the US came under heavy regulation from a governing body called the Comics Code Authority. The harsh rules on what could and could not be depicted at this time lead to the end of many comics, characters, and publishers, but creators like Stan Lee pushed back against the CCA until its eventual demise.

His legacy lives not only in the characters he created but in the comics industry itself that we know and love today. If you're not familiar with Stan Lee's creations, or if you just want to reread some classics, we've created some recommended lists for you.
