  • UPDATE – Provincial announcement regarding public libraries and pickups

    15/05/2020

We greatly appreciate the Province’s announcement that as part of the first phase of reopening libraries can begin to offer pick-up or delivery of materials.

There is a lot of work to do be able to offer these services while ensuring the safety of our employees and our customers. Our plan to resume our physical services needs to account for physical distancing requirements, provision of personal protective equipment, enhanced sanitary controls, and new protocols for employees and customers. We are working on offering holds pick-ups as soon as we can safely do so.

We will be communicating all new developments in our service offering to you on all our platforms, as soon as we have updates.

Thank you for your patience as we move through this rapidly evolving situation.

OPL branches, Bookmobile stops and Homebound delivery services are closed until June 30, 2020. The closure is in response to advice from Ottawa Public Health (OPH) with regards to COVID-19 (coronavirus) for the health and safety of our community. We will continue to monitor the situation and reassess as the situation evolves. Currently, please note:

    • Due dates for all currently checked out materials have been extended and late fees suspended.
    • Book drops are not available since branches are closed. Hold on to OPL items and return them when branches reopen.
    • Holds are suspended, and pick up expiry dates extended. This includes interlibrary loans (ILL).
    • Meeting room rentals are cancelled, and fees are being refunded; and
    • Computer bookings, programs, events and outreach activities are cancelled.
    • Expired cards, or those about to expire, have been extended.

You can use the Library online:

We thank you for your patience and support, and we look forward to seeing you online and in person again soon.

Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

10/09/2015

Hello, teen OPL blog readers! I hope you’ve been having a good week. Oh wait… back to school was two days ago. Okay, I take it back. However, I have a book that you can read to distract yourself from homework! It’s called The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

The protagonist of The Raven Boys is a girl, around the age of sixteen named Blue Sargent. Her mom and everyone else is her house spend their days doing psychic readings through a business runout of their home. While the predictions are often all over the place, each psychic Blue has ever met agrees on one thing: if Blue should kiss her true love, he’ll die. To add to this, Blue has just been told that her true love’s name is Gansey and that this is the year she will fall in love.

Enter the raven boys. These are the richest, snobbiest, and most annoying adolescent boys that Blue’s small town of Henrietta has to offer. They are the students of Aglionby academy, whose emblem is a raven (hence the nickname ‘raven boys’). Blue, along with the rest of her town, despises the local wealthy troublemakers. That is, until she becomes friends with four of them. Adam, Ronan, Noah, and Gansey. Together they become entrenched in the search for an ancient Welsh king, and end up wading neck deep into a well spun web of secrets, omens, and the supernatural.

Maggie Stiefvater is an excellent writer and The Raven Boys may be her best work. I tore through this book, and I am anxiously awaiting my hold on the sequel (The Dream Thieves) to be ready for pickup! Her writing style is the kind that you aren’t intimidated or bored by, and it’s the kind of story that gets better the more you think about it. Get the The Raven Boys as a book, audiobook, or e-book from the Ottawa Public Library! (Also, I’ve checked and there’s like one person in line for the book so it won’t be a long wait.)
