Sensible & Stylish: Live Alone and Like It by Marjorie Hillis

10/06/2014

Marjorie Hillis’ Live Alone and Like It is the best guide to living I have yet read. While originally aimed at the single girl in 1936, the advice provided by Ms. Hillis is just the thing for anyone looking to live – and live well – on a budget.

With an emphasis on personal and financial independence, Live Alone and Like It covers not only aspects of comfortably furnishing an apartment and stylishly outfitting yourself, but also how to behave well in social and romantic relationships. This vintage advice is like a breath of fresh air in our digital age – don’t make yourself always available to everyone, and RSVP in a timely and truthful manner? Clearly the moment for Ms. Hillis has come again!

While one or two things may have changed over time (for example, Ms. Hillis expects even the sparsest little apartment to come with a cook), the advice remains practical and elegant. A delicious and inspiring read for women and men, and most especially for those striking out on their own. Perhaps once you’ve read it for yourself, you’ll find a copy for a new graduate in your life. A sequel, Orchids on Your Budget (alternate title: Bubbly on Your Budget) has also been published.

Not to be missed, and certainly not to be resisted.
