Summer Fun for Everyone!

kids playing video games and board games

Aug 09, 2022

The Games Café at Greenboro branch is one of our most successful programs this summer. Bringing together teens and children, it’s a great opportunity for friend and siblings to play together in a safe environment. The Café menu? All kind of games. Offering Wii, PS4, VR and board games in the same space was just the best way to please all the kids of the neighborhood. Session after session, we saw the attendance number higher, simply because kids start bringing friends, neighbors and even those who they are babysitting.

It was heartwarming to see the “pro” of the WII teaching the younger ones how to play, and to see our regular teens accepting to have a shorter playing time at the VR so that their new friends can try the Game “Spiderman” too.

I am so thankful to my coworker Simon who never gets impatient or tired taking care of the VR players. I am also thankful to my volunteers who take the time to explain the rules of each board game and try to play with the youngest ones who are just starting so that no one feels left alone.

The parent’s feedback was very positive too. One mom explained that she refuses to have the PS4 at home but doesn’t mind it once a week for her child. Another mom said that she has most of the board games at home and she never saw her children so passionate about playing.

The best moment I liked this summer is when a couple of grandparents got tired waiting for their grandson who didn’t want to give up the Wii and ended up taking chairs and playing monopoly until the end of the program.
