Good day Ottawa readers! 

When you have read all the books by your favourite author or you have to find a book for your child who is reading Harry Potter for the 3rd time, you know it is time for you to consult OPL's 7 Tips, Tricks and Tools to Finding a Good Book.

List of tips, tricks and tools:

1. Most Requested by Month: This link displays OPL reader's most requested titles of the month.  

2. Bestsellers: Discover the best selling books according to a variety of Canadian and American newspapers and other groups here.

3. Loan Stars: 'Loan Stars' are the best books of the month as voted by Canadian library staff.  Also check out Loan Stars Juvenile and Young Adult

4. #AskALibrarian: Every Thursdays at noon on X (Twitter), Ottawans can consult librarians (including ours) from across the continent for reading recommendations by searching #AskALibrarian on X.  

5. Novelist or Novelist K-8.  This resource, available for free from our website, will give you read-alike suggestions. You can access Novelist here and Novelist K-8 here.

6. Related titles : When you select a book on the OPL website, lower down on the web page, under the book description, there are 'Related titles' and 'Community lists featuring this title'. These may offer some interesting suggestions. 

7. Staff lists: Finally, from our website, it is possible to search for lists of book recommendations compiled by library staff.  When performing a search, select 'List' rather than 'Keyword' to find lists of similar reading recommendations.

Here are a few ways that you can find reading recommendations using free library resources. Pro Tip: When you select a book on the OPL website, scroll down. Under the book description, you can find 'Related titles' and 'Community lists featuring this title'. These may offer some interesting suggestions for your next read. ;)

    Thursdays at noon on Twitter (now X), you can consult librarians (including ours) from across the continent for reading recommendations by searching #AskALibrarian.
  • OPL's Most Requested

    Read OPL's most requested by month by following the link.
  • Bestsellers

    This link will lead to the list of best selling books according to a variety of Canadian and American newspapers and other groups.
  • Loanstars

    Follow the link to the best books of the month as voted by Canadian library staff.
  • Novelist

    This resource, available for free from our website, will give you read-alike suggestions by author or book title.
