A Truth Universally Acknowledged: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

03/07/2014

Binge-watching meets Jane Austen in the Emmy Award-winning YouTube series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice adapted into a fictional video blog. Our hostess, Lizzie Bennet, documents the trials and tribulations of being a twenty-four-year-old grad student in a family saddled with debt. Much time is spent discussing the love life of her sister Jane, the worrying behaviour of her sister Lydia, and (of course) how complicated everyone’s life becomes when Bing Lee and William Darcy move into the neighbourhood...

Fans of Austen’s work will be delighted by the attention to detail in this update, and newcomers will thoroughly enjoy the series on its own merits. The episodes are quite short (although I bet you can’t watch just one), and viewers can click through at the end of each episode to the next of Lizzie Bennet’s entries – or, occasionally, to vlog entries by other characters, ensuring that as many of Austen’s plot threads are included as possible.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries has been completed, but other series under the banner of Pemberley Digital have since been undertaken, including Emma Approved, based on Austen's Emma.

And when you’ve finished powering through the series, check out the companion book to the series, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet.

This series is a treat for Jane Austen fans, and a great way to introduce a reluctant reader to her work!
