Walk for Your Health!

The Ottawa Public Library, in partnership with Ottawa Public Health, will offer three Walking programs throughout the month of June at the Orleans, Rosemount, and Alta Vista branches. Each program will start with a brief presentation about the many benefits of walking, and tools available to make it fun and interesting to walk every day. The presentation will be followed by a 1.5-2.5 km walk starting and finishing at the library branch, following a route mapped out by Ottawa Public Health.

This program provides a great opportunity to get to know your neighbourhood, catch up with friends and meet new ones – all while improving your health!

Here are some key messages about walking that Ottawa Public Health would like to share:

  • Plan to walk.  This is a good way to get your recommended 150 minutes or more of weekly physical activity
  • Break up sitting time.  Walk for 10 minutes
  • Aim to walk 10,000 steps a day
  • Walk to work, school, and for your daily errands
  • Walk for trips of 2 km or less
  • Walk with others.  This is a good way to walk regularly and meet new people
  • Walk for fun
  • Use your local library as your walking hub!
