We're thrilled to invite you to an enriching event that embodies the essence of community connection and personal growth – the Human Library! On September 27, 2023, in partnership with the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Public Library – Main Branch will transform into a space where stories come to life, offering you a chance to listen, learn, and engage with the diverse experiences of our community members.

The Human Library is a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn, and engage directly with the stories of the individuals that make up our diverse community. Just like borrowing a book from our shelves, attendees can now 'borrow' a human book for a 20-minute conversation. This event offers a personal, one-on-one interaction where you can explore and understand the experiences that have shaped each person's journey.

Event highlights:

  • Date: Wednesday, September 27, 2023

  • Time: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

  • Location: Ottawa Public Library – Main Branch

  • Cost: FREE!

Imagine having the opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations with living 'books' that share their personal stories. Originating in Denmark in 2000, the Human Library movement was born with the purpose of fostering dialogue and understanding among different community groups. Since then, this concept has gained global popularity, and we're excited to bring it to you.

Experience the journey: Here's how it works:

  • Visit the Main Branch on September 27

  • Join us anytime between 11 am and 3 pm

  • Discover the list of available Human Books

  • Choose a book that piques your interest

  • Engage in a 20-minute conversation, learning about their experiences and perspectives

  • Books are available on a first-come, first-served basis

Why attend the Human Library? This initiative serves as an opportunity for you to learn more about the existing services in Ottawa and how to access them effectively.

Our Human Library features individuals who are deeply committed to making Ottawa's communities healthier, safer, and more inclusive. These remarkable 'books' are aligned with the priorities of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan (CSWB Plan), a roadmap to creating a sustainable community where everyone thrives. Through their stories, you'll gain insights into critical topics such as gender equity, mental health, financial security, gender-based violence prevention and support, rent supplements, integrated systems, and discrimination.

Your participation not only benefits your personal growth but also directly contributes to the enhancement of our library's core values and the well-being of Ottawa's residents.

We encourage you to take advantage of this unique event, embrace the power of one-on-one conversations, and continue nurturing the vibrant fabric of our community.
