The Cardboard Kingdom — Join in a special Ottawa Kids eRead, November 16 to December 18, 2020

Ottawa Public Library is always looking for ways to support literacy and a love of reading by providing resources and tools for children and parents. In partnership with the U.S. Embassy, the Library is presenting a unique experience; a community eRead for children ages 6 to 10. Starting November 16, 2020, there will be simultaneous and no-waitlist access to the graphic novel TheCardboard Kingdom eBookfor kids to enjoy from home, school, or wherever they like to read and discover stories that will expand their world. They can then gather online for a live Q&A event in December to meet the authors, ask questions, and share their comments. Stay tuned for the date and time to be announced soon.

The Cardboard Kingdomwas nominated for an Eisner Award and named the best book of the year in 2018 by Kirkus Reviews. A perfect choice to foster discussion and nurture a vision of a more inclusive world.The Cardboard Kingdomwas created, organized, and drawn by Chad Sell with writing from ten other authors: Jay Fuller, David DeMeo, Katie Schenkel, Kris Moore, Molly Muldoon, Vid Alliger, Manuel Betancourt, Michael Cole, Cloud Jacobs, and Barbara Perez Marquez.

The Cardboard Kingdomis written in a vivid style that engages the power of imagination and tells a story that supports emotional growth and imparts a message of inclusiveness. Portraying children in the midst of discovering their identity, the book tackles current social issues and encourages each child to find their ideal self through imagination.

So, Ottawa parents and teachers, mark your calendar!

  • The celebrated American graphic novel will be made available on Overdrive and Libby from November 16 until December 18, in eBook format for unlimited simultaneous access using a Library card.
  • Mid-December, young readers can join in for a YouTube Live Q&A panel all about the book they have just discovered! Meet some of The Cardboard Kingdom’s authors and enjoy a fascinating conversation moderated by a Canadian author. More details to follow.

The Library is delighted to partner with the U.S. Embassy in this special eRead for kids all across Ottawa enabling young readers to discover inspiring authors from south of the border. It is the Library’s mission to promote learning, spark curiosity, and connect people.

Readers in grades two to six will not want to miss this opportunity to discover an uplifting new book along with hundreds of other Ottawa children this fall, whether they are going to school in person or at home online! They will surely enjoy putting themselves in the shoes of the intriguing characters in this graphic novel and exploring their emotions, desires, and aspirations.
