NEW: Musical Instrument Lending Library!

Musical Instrument Lending Library logo

Hey Ottawa – OPL is now lending out a variety of musical instruments, to make sure you have everything you need on your path to discovering your musical talents.

The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library is a new initiative at the Main and Nepean Centrepointe branches of the Ottawa Public Library where you can borrow a guitar, a mandolin, a violin, a ukulele, and a variety of other musical instruments.

The collection includes 150 instruments, so far, and we hope to expand it with donations of new and gently used musical instruments through a local donation drive that runs until December 8, 2017.

The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library has been a resounding success in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Kitchener where Sun Life Financial has partnered with public libraries to deliver this innovative program.

Now it is your turn, Ottawa, to pick up the beat, fiddle the strings, or tickle the ivories and try a wide range of instruments that can be borrowed by anyone with an OPL card in good standing.

Sun Life is making a philanthropic donation of $140,000 to the Ottawa Public Library to fund the operating costs.  In addition to Sun Life donating the instruments including guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, violins, drums and portable keyboards, Sun Life has created a series of videos to assist with the use, care and enjoyment of the instruments which are available through the OPL website. Whether you are a beginner picking up an instrument for the first time or a seasoned musician, the musical instrument lending library will help anyone develop their music literacy skills and bring more music into their life.

So check out a musical instrument at OPL’s Main or Nepean Centrepointe branch, learn something new, and tune in to the world of music

I first saw this at the Vancouver library and thought it was a great idea. Nice opportunity for people to try new instruments without financial obligation.

Yet another good initiative for our library system!

this is such a good idea! can't wait to try this program out!

Awaiting - one trumpet - I would even be willing to purchase "my own" mouthpiece...

I am sure this initiative will encourage folks to try out different musical instruments.
