07/04/2020

OPL branches, Bookmobile stops and Homebound deliver services will remain closed until June 30, 2020.

We are extending the temporary closure in alignment with the City of Ottawa’s decision to keep public facilities closed.

This is part of a dedicated effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and keep our community safe.

Please note that:

  • All book drops are closed: keep borrowed items
    at home until branches reopen
  • Due dates have been extended for all currently checked out materials
    and late fees suspended
  • Holds have been suspended, and pickup expiry dates extended.

We remain here for you, online!

Comments

We all want to send a big thank you to all the library staff for being a continued support to everyone during this crisis. We appreciate that you are all working to keep books and activities and a community connection alive for all of us. Thank you!

Thank YOU for this lovely note. We are all trying to do our part, and we are so pleased to be able to provide these services and collections to our community.

I am adding my own appreciation for the efforts of the library staff, but would like to suggest the comeback of an old service - Freegal. All online resources except downloading books require a permanent connection to the Internet, which is not always practical. Freegal uniquely enables the legal downloading of music and listening wherever. Streaming services simply do not provide the sound quality for serious listening, which is important now without access to CDs. And Freegal has a unique catalog of Czech, Hungarian and Russian classical labels, plus vintage French and Italian popular singers. Please bring back Freegal even if it means getting rid of some other online service.

Thank you for your comments.
At this time OPL offers Naxos and Hoopla for online music options, with an increase from 4 to 8 Hoopla downloads per month while the Library remains closed to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Freegal was available for several years and was enjoyed by only a small number of people in Ottawa at great expense, despite our promotional efforts.
At this time we are not looking into bringing it back. Some free music services are available in the digital media landscape that can provide the music recordings you are looking for.
