Read Away, This Franco-Ontarian Day!

21/09/2020

We’ve been waiting all year for this!

With Franco-Ontarian day just around the corner, we’ve put together the perfect booklist to kickoff the celebrations. September 25th is about honouring Francophonie— yes— but it’s also about boasting our heritage and the cultural variety that exists in our community. The Franco-Ontarian authors in this list will make you proud to say “I’m celebrating Franco-Ontarian Day”!

Why not celebrate the diversity in our community with Ils ne veulent pas jouer avec moi !!! by Franco-Orléans author Andrée Poulin? Panda and Zebra don’t want to play with Flamingo, he is much too pink for them. But should everything be so black and white— or can others see la vie en rose? Young readers will learn to value the skin they’re in no matter what others think or say.

Early independent readers can join in on the fun, too, with this unique perspective on Acadian history. La longue histoire de la petite vache will introduce your littlest family members and friends to a cow (and not just any cow!)— an Acadian cow who is concerned about keeping her Canadian lineage going.  An empowering, Franco-Ontarian female protagonist by the renowned Daniel Marchildon!? Moo yeah!

Teens of Ottawa will love, love, love this quick look into their city before protagonist Théo moves onto bigger things up north. L’odyssée des neiges by Franco-Ottawan Pierre-Luc Bélanger will take readers on a wild ride through snowy hills and the joys of being a young adult, wild and free. Théo has his whole life ahead of him. Being one of the best hockey players in the country means he’ll be playing for the NHL in no time. In a sudden turn of events, though, our beloved Théo has to leave his dreams behind. But never fear! He fixes up a snowmobile with his friends— and what next? They set off for the adventure of a lifetime in snowmobiling competitions and life in the unknown.

Or pick up this gem that digs deep into the rich history of Franco-Ontario. L’Ontario Francais, quatre siècles d’histoiredelivers exactly what it promises… a beautifully depicted word picture in memorialization of the evolvement of francophones in Ontario; from its humble beginnings through to the next four centuries. The variety of high-quality photos will be sure to touch the heart as well!

Browse the remaining titles below for more priceless Franco-Ontarian reads. If you are as passionate as we are about Franco-Ontarian literature, join us for Croisée des mots, a program of virtual literary encounters with Franco-Ontarian authors, we will welcome Sylvie Bérard on October 14th. Don’t forget that the 25th of September is also Buy a Franco-Ontarian book day! Enjoy!!!
