Betasamosake Simpson’s Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies is a novel of Anishinaabe aesthetics cast in prose and poetic fragments. It is a beautiful and important story about Indigenous life in the urban settler world, colonialism, climate change, and connection. This is a challenging book, both in content and form, that presents timely and vital topics in a way that defies the reader’s expectations of how to read a novel.

Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies recently made the 2022 shortlist for the prestigious Dublin Literary Awards, one of the world’s richest prizes for a novel in English, nominated by OPL. Seventy-nine books were nominated by public libraries and librarians from around the world and only six titles were included in the shortlist of finalists, including Betasamosake Simpson’s Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies.

For the third time in the 27-year history of the Dublin Literary Awards, a nomination from the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) was included in the Award’s Shortlist. OPL’s contribution as a nominating library for the Dublin Literary Award, is an example of how local public libraries support Canadian literature and Indigenous and Canadian voices. The Ottawa Public Library is pleased and committed to put their librarians’ knowledge, passion and expertise to promote not only reading and books in general but also to foster advanced literature, diverse perspectives and creative expression. Please join OPL and other book lovers in reading Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies this National Indigenous History Month.
