It affects millions of people worldwide, regardless of age or gender, and can impact posture, mobility, and overall quality of life. Most are diagnosed with scoliosis between the ages of 10 and 15, but the condition also affects infants and adults.  Girls are eight times more likely than boys to have a curve that will progress to a magnitude that requires treatment. By early detection and intervention, you can prevent the progression of the condition and reduce the necessity for more invasive procedures like surgery.

Join us for a Labrador Documentary Project, a series of short films celebrating Inuit culture and teaching history from the beautiful northeast coast of Canada. The directors of these films - Heather Campbell, Holly Andersen, Jennie Williams, and Ossie Michelin - are also past participants and recent leaders of the Labrador Creative Arts Festival, the longest-running children's art festival in Canada.

Part oral history and part visual poem, Miss Campbell: Inuk Teacher is the story of Evelyn Campbell, a trailblazer for an Inuit-led educational system in the small community of Rigolet, Labrador.

In Hebron Relocation, Holly Andersen explores what makes a place a home as she learns more about her community’s connection to generations of displaced northern Labrador Inuit.

Run as fast as you can, the Nalujuit are here! Filmmaker Jennie Williams brings us the story of an exhilarating and sometimes terrifying Nunatsiavut tradition in Nalujuk Night.

In Evan’s Drum, an adventurous young boy and his determined mother share a passion for Labrador Inuit drum dancing.

    ----

Inconvenient Indian dives deep into the brilliant mind of Thomas King, Indigenous intellectual, master storyteller, and author of the bestselling book The Inconvenient Indian, to shatter the misconception that history is anything more than stories we tell about the past.

Unpacking hundreds of years of history, Inconvenient Indian creatively frames Thomas King’s critical journey back through the colonial narratives of North America with Coyote as our cabdriver. “Stories are all we are,” King tells us as he eloquently exposes the falsehoods of white supremacy and deftly punctures myths of Indigenous erasure to lay bare what has been extracted from the land, culture and peoples of Turtle Island.

In this time of momentous change and essential re-examination, Inconvenient Indian is a powerful visual poem anchored in the land and amplified by the voices of those who continue the tradition of Indigenous resistance, such as Christi Belcourt, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Nyla Innuksuk, A Tribe Called Red, Skawennati, Jason Edward Lewis, Carman Tozer, Steven Lonsdale and Kent Monkman. Their words and actions subvert the “inconvenience” of their existence, creating an essential new narrative and a possible path forward for us all.

Inconvenient Indian is a crucial part of the conversation between Indigenous peoples and those of us who have settled, uninvited, on these lands.

2020 | 90 min. English, Inuktitut, Cree and Anishinaabemowin with English subtitles. Brought to you by the National Film Board.

Dr. Jules Arita Koostachin’s deeply personal documentary WaaPaKe (Tomorrow) asks the difficult question: “Who are we without our pain?”

For generations, the suffering of residential school Survivors has radiated outward, impacting Indigenous families and communities. Children, parents and grandparents have contended with the unspoken trauma, manifested in the lingering effects of colonialism: addiction, emotional abuse and broken relationships.

In her efforts to help the children of Survivors, including herself and her family, Koostachin makes the difficult decision to step in front of the camera and participate in the circle of truth. She is joined in this courageous act of solidarity by members of her immediate family, as well as an array of voices from Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Moving beyond burying intergenerational trauma, WaaPaKe (Tomorrow) is an invitation to unravel the tangled threads of silence and unite in collective freedom and power.

Do you love to write? Is writing the air you breathe, or is there ink in your veins?

The Stittsville Creative Writing Group is a collection of people who love to write.

We meet weekly to read from text we have written on our own time during the previous week, and engage in other writing activities.

This is not a class on writing, or a workshop for manuscripts. Instead, we are people who love to write and share our works.

There are those who mostly listen rather than write, those who write prolifically but only share with the group, and a broad spectrum in between.

If your interest is in the love of writing, this group may be for you.

A list of the recommended titles will appear on the website after the event*, to share with other members of the community what Cumberland-area residents are reading.

    Thursday, June 27, 2024 - 7:00pm

Drawing from over 15 years of queer and trans advocacy, as well as over a decade in practice as a wellness professional, trauma recovery expert, and conflict transformation facilitator, award-winning author and spiritual teacher Kai Cheng Thom offers a revitalizing perspective on the meaning of love in a time of intense social strife and political polarization : How do we understand love not as a fuzzy feeling, not as an intellectual concept, but as a discipline and set of practices that we can apply to strengthen our resilience and deepen relationships for the purpose of pursuing justice? Love as our greatest power in the struggle for social change? This highly engaged, practically focused presentation will leave you with: 1) A simple but powerful psychological framework for understanding love and resilience as a practice, 2) 3 simple tools that you can use to resolve conflict and engage in meaningful conversations with people who may hold bigoted or prejudiced beliefs, 3) A visualization practice for self-care and personal development.

There will be a Q&A and book signing with the author to follow the event.

This is a hybrid event: the program is in-person, but we will also stream live on OPL's YouTube page.

Registration is for the in-person portion of the event.

In-person attendees will get the chance to win a copy of Falling Back in Love with Being Human.

This event is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association.
