CANCELLED The Historical Society of Ottawa Speaker Series (Afternoon) 1:00 pm Lecture: HATPINS & DEFIANCE - THE BATTLE IN OTTAWA AGAINST REGULATION 17

The March 25th Lecture will be CANCELLED.

Did the Ontario provincial government in 1912 imagine the anger and defiance that would result when they passed legislation to outlaw French-language education in Ontario schools?  Could the government have anticipated that two young sisters in Ottawa would defy the authorities and secretly continue to teach to Franco-Ontarian children in their mother tongue?

Could they have predicted that outraged mothers and fathers of those students would surround the local school armed with hatpins, brooms, rolling pins and frying pans… and successfully fend off platoons of police for the sake of their children’s education?

Join us and learn about this amazing story of passion and courage from Ottawa’s past.

Guest Speaker:  JEAN YVES PELLETIER, RESEARCHER, FRANCO-ONTARIAN HERITAGE & HISTORY

Offered in partnership with the Historical Society of Ottawa.
