Living with Schizophrenia & Depression

During her first year of university, Ayan Yusuf began feeling paranoid and experiencing delusions. Four years later, a doctor diagnosed her with schizophrenia and depression. Fearing judgment, she lived in denial and withdrew from those around her. After an attempt to take her own life, Ayan remembers a nurse standing over her bedside at the hospital, explaining that she had a purpose and encouraging her to find it. Now, Ayan manages her health through medication and is creating the foundation A Ray of H.O.P.E to advocate for mental health supports both here and in Somalia.
