OTTAWA – The Metcalfe village branch of Ottawa Public Library will move late next year to the old Metcalfe Town Hall, down the road from the current location. Contactless holds pickup and returns service will continue at the current location on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm until the move in late 2021.
The facility currently housing Ottawa Public Library's Metcalfe village branch, at 2782 8th Line, has several major structural issues that make it unusable for library purposes. The former Metcalfe Town Hall, located nearby at 8243 Victoria Street, has been identified and secured as a good alternative location to ensure continued library services in the community. The Metcalfe Town Hall will be renovated to ensure it meets building code, life safety, and accessibility requirements.
After next year’s move, the new location will consolidate services in one convenient location for OPL customers and all residents who wish to take advantage of the varied Library services, collections, learning and cultural resources at the Metcalfe village branch. The City has hired N45 Architecture as the design consultant and construction will commence in Spring 2021, with completion later that year. The OPL Board approved $250,000 in the 2020 budget towards a solution. This funding will be used for design and fit-up to meet the Library’s requirements. The City will contribute additional funding to cover lifecycle work on the building. The Metcalfe Town Hall will remain the branch location while OPL studies a longer-term solution in conjunction with its Facilities Master Plan. These renovations will be a long-term investment in the building that will serve the community well beyond use by the library.
