  • Canadian Film Day / Journée du cinéma canadien

    Wednesday Apr 17, 2024 at 12:30pm
    150 minutes

    Le français suit l’anglais

The latest film from director Clement Virgo, Brother is a beautifully shot master work of subtle, affecting storytelling. Adapted from David Chariandy’s award-winning novel of the same name, Brother tells the story of Francis and Michael, two Black Canadian brothers growing up in Scarborough in the early 1990s. Recently immigrated to Canada, the brothers navigate the challenges of growing up outsiders, with feet in two worlds. Brother was named to TIFF’s annual Canada’s Top Ten list for 2022 and won a record 12 Canadian Screen Awards including Best Picture. “Brother is a film that reaffirms why I love movies…This is a vital piece of cinema that hasn’t received the buzz it deserves.” – Valerie Complex, Deadline Hollywood 2022.

109 min. English with English subtitles.

» – Valerie Complex, Deadline Hollywood 2022.

109 min. En anglais avec sous-titres en anglais.

  • Two hands joined around a cup of coffee

    Thursday May 30, 2024 at 6:15pm
    120 minutes

At a Death Café, people gather together to discuss death. This event doesn’t have any particular objectives or themes aside from increasing everyone’s awareness of death and exploring our relationships with death, dying and grief. As we grapple with what life looks like today, having a safe and non-judgmental space to talk about difficult subjects is so important and can have a significant impact both on how we live and how we die.

Ottawa Public Library is partnering with the Home Hospice Association to offer death cafés with various themes. Check out the OPL website for upcoming death cafés (spring 2024).

The Caregivers Death Café is for anyone who is currently, or who has ever been, in a caregiving role. Providing care to someone who is sick or facing death can often greatly impact the caregiver’s relationship with their own mortality. This Death Café gives caregivers the chance to openly talk about their feelings, thoughts, and experiences around dying, death, grief, and loss.

Ottawa Public Library is partnering with the Home Hospice Association to offer death cafés at various locations and with various themes. Check out the OPL website for other cafés.
