    The Cumberland branch of the Ottawa Public Library is pleased to present Ottawa mystery writers Brenda Chapman and Don Butler as they each read a short excerpt from their books, and answer your questions about their stories, their writing process, and their own recommended reads. 

    Brenda Chapman has authored more than 20 novels and novellas, including the lauded Stonechild and Rouleau police procedural series, set mainly in Kingston, Ontario. Her latest novel, When Last Seen, is the second in her new Ottawa-based mystery series Hunter and Tate.   

    Don Butler enjoyed a long career as a reporter and senior editor at the Ottawa Citizen, but has always aspired to write fiction. His first novel, A Life of Bliss, set in Ottawa and Greece, was released in 2021. He has just finished a sequel, Norman’s Conquest, slated for release in the spring 2024.

    Following the discussion, the authors will have a selection of their books available for purchase for $20 each. Cash only.

Sutherland, the award-winning author of the bestselling Haunted Canada series and many spooky novels, for an event filled with storytelling, history, humour…and ghosts, of course! Joel, who grew up in Ottawa, will also share some local ghost stories and tips for aspiring young writers in this fun, interactive program. Also, with Halloween just around the corner, we invite you to start the party early and wear your costume!

    Bio:

    Joel A. Sutherland is the Silver Birch Award-winning author of numerous volumes of Haunted Canada (a series that now has more than 500,000 copies in print and is celebrating its 20th anniversary), Screamers (Scholastic Canada), and Summer's End (a Red Maple Award Honour Book currently in development for television by Scholastic Entertainment). His series, Haunted, including The House Next Door, has been praised by Goosebumps author R.L. Stine. His latest release is his debut young adult novel, House of Ash and Bone (Tundra Books).
