  • National Canadian Film Day 2024

    Wednesday Apr 17, 2024 at 3:30am
    105 minutes

Twenty-five years after starring in the hit 90s film Smoke Signals, Cody Lightning directs and stars in this uproarious mockumentary about a fictionalized version of himself attempting to make a sequel. When a mysterious fan offers a full budget for the film, Cody jumps at the chance, promising the full participation of the original cast. The only thing standing in his way is the small fact that the entire original cast hates him. A refreshing and occasionally raunchy comedy, this charming underdog story is a great movie about how to make a terrible one. 2023. 102 min. English with French subtitles.

2023. 102 min. Anglais avec sous-titres français.

When Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown. Abbott’s new documentary The Magnitude of All Things draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. What do these stories have in common? The answer, surprisingly, is everything.

For the people featured, climate change is not happening in the distant future: it is kicking down the front door. Battles waged, lamentations of loss, and raw testimony coalesce into an extraordinary tapestry, woven together with raw emotion and staggering beauty that transform darkness into light, grief into action.

    2020. 85 min. English only.

This feature-length documentary focuses on four individuals who have lived through painful and horrific events but have managed to find the ability to forgive. Lesley Parrott, Anne Marie Hagan, Alan McBride, and Reverend Julie Nicholson have all lost family members through violent crimes and are trying to absorb, cope with, and move past it. In a world wracked by increasing violence and horror, the film brings hope that there are other possibilities beyond blind revenge; that in forgiving others we can set ourselves free.

In a small Indian village, Ranjit wakes up to find that his 13-year-old daughter has not returned from a family wedding. A few hours later, she’s found stumbling home. After being abducted into the woods, she was sexually assaulted by three men. Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. A cinematic documentary, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of. With tremendous access, we witness the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come.

    2022 - 127 minute - English only.
