10 things you might not know about the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) Bookmobiles

12/10/2011
  1. OPL’s two Bookmobiles visit more than 20 communities across the city once a week. Check out the schedule here.
  2. We have books, audio books, large print materials, magazines, DVDs, videos, and material in other languages and our own Express collection. You can order anything in the OPL system and have it sent to a particular stop – just ask us!
  3. The Bookmobiles visit each stop with two library staff members: one does the driving and the checkin/checkout, and the other answers all your information, reference and readers' advisory questions... Ask us about a good book. Our favourites featuring bookmobiles are Ian Sansom's The Mobile Library series (great for McCall Smith fans) and La tournée d'automne byJacques Poulin.
  4. The Bookmobiles weigh 14 tonnes each, and travel around 35,000 km a year.
  5. Both of the Bookmobiles are wheelchair accessible.
  6. One of our most frequent comments is, “But when we drove by, your doors were closed so we thought you were closed!” Nope. We were probably just keeping cold air in (during the summer) or out (during the winter).
  7. We’re on Twitter! Stay up to date with news and schedule modifications @OttBkMobileBus.
  8. Being on Twitter is totally web 2.0, but we also love it when you call us (613-580-2424 x32629) or e-mail us at Bookmobile [at] BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca.
  9. We are a Pigeon-positive space (but no, he can’t drive the bus!):
