2018 Audie Awards

On May 31, the 2018 Audie Award winners were announced. The Audie Awards are given by the Audio Publishers Association to the top titles in audio format. There are 27 categories of awards, including audiobook of the year, best female narrator, best male narrator, audio drama, humour, and history/biography to name a few.

Audiobook of the Year

The audiobook of the year was given to Lincoln in the Bardo by George Sanders.  An astonishing 166 narrators portrayed this story, including Nick Offerman, David Sedaris and George Sanders.

This novel focuses on Abraham Lincoln during the beginning of the Civil War, and his gravely ill son, who soon passes away leaving Lincoln heartbroken.  Lincoln is accompanied by a cast of characters, living and dead, weaving a story both bizarre and humourous.  Sanders spins a tale of family, loss, life, death and the supernatural, as   Lincoln struggles for his son’s soul in the bardo.

Best Female Narrator

The best female narrator award was given to The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and narrated by Bahni Turpin.  Saricks (2017) describes Turpin as “…versatile, creative, master of accents, virtuoso performer, and Booklist’s 2017 Voice of Choice.”

Thomas’ novel explores the competing worlds of 16 year old Starr Carter; the fancy prep school she attends versus the poor neighborhood in which she lives.  Starr’s precarious balance is shattered when she witnesses the shooting of her friend Khalil by a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Rumours swirl-- that Khalil was a drug dealer, or gang members, or a thug. Everyone wants to know what happened, and only Starr has the answers. However, what she does or doesn’t say can change everything, and put her in danger…

Best Male Narrator

The best male narrator was given to Trevor Noah for his book Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood.  Noah, host of The Today Show, provides a glimpse into his life as a young man in South Africa during Apartheid, sharing stories of teenage romance, of family, of poverty, and of a world obsessed with color.  Noah’s stories are described as moving, dark, hilarious, and compassionate.
