Online source for recent obituaries

Searching for an obituary but not sure of the date?  Finding death notices in the Ottawa Citizen is easy if you know the date of death: the Main Library holds microfilm copies of the Citizen and the  Ottawa Journal from the 1800s to date, so you can browse the papers for a few days after the death date and if a notice was printed, you'll find it.  It gets trickier, though, if you don't know the exact date of death, since the microfilm is not indexed, and browsing through months or years of it is not very practical.  However, if the death is relatively recent, there's an easier way. is a searchable database of death notices published in newspapers in 10 Canadian cities, including the Ottawa Citizen, from 2002 onward.  To search for an obituary, choose "Advanced Search" under the heading "Search Obituaries and Guest Books".  At the resulting Search Page,  enter the name you are looking for and choose the newspaper you want.  Most important, be sure to change the date range beside the calendar icon.  "All dates" will search all available obituaries, and you will see the full text.  Much easier than scrolling through all those reels of microfilm!
